Chincoteague was the focal point for fowl hunting on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Virginia for 2 centuries. Hunters and guides bought hunting gear on the island, including beautiful, life-like decoys This book captures some of the local carvers.
This publication introduces the genre of decoy carving, briefly giving the economic history of the island which led to the popularity of these decoys, and the evolution of decoys from hunting tools to works of art. Chinocteague carvers are shown with images of the men and their decoys, plus a brief bio for each carver. Inlcuded is a map showing where each carver lived on the Island.
